Equine Clicker 101 Lesson #2 – Leading Our Way to Impulse Control – by Jeffers Pet

Shawna Karrasch leads us through working on manners both on the ground and around food. However, we are going to take it a bit further and add movement. We will be reinforcing relaxation and downward transitions. Therefore we put a greater value on our horses choice to quiet their bodies AND minds. Overtime this skill(choice to settle) can carry over to all sorts of real world situations and become an invaluable tool. Listen in…

Hi Shawna, I have 2 mustangs 7 and 9 years I’ve had them a year and a half. We adopted Hashbrown and Bourban from the Florence Az correctional facility. Both were named and trained by the inmates there. Bourban is so much more relaxed around food and is advancing more quickly. Hashbrown is still working on being more relaxed. The only time he has energy is around food! Hashbrown stuffs as much food in his mouth as he can with whatever he is eating! He keeps his head away but opens his mouth like jaws! He will take the food with his slobbery lips and if I leave my hand too long he might pinch my palm with his teeth. Sometimes I feed him knuckles up at the beginning of the session to remind him to use his lips only. I keep listening to podcast 1 and 2 repeatedly along with You Tube Videos to make sure I have it solid. I appreciate all your free resources but wish someday to attend a clinic at Terra Nova.
    Thanks Shawna and Terra Nova

Hi Shawna – Thank you so much for the Podcast – I’ve listened to all of them and the first 5 multiple times. I ordered and received a kit (including a dvd with baby shawna!) and I am thrilled to be coming for a 5 day clinic in May – can’t wait. In the meantime..is there a video of the liberty leading? This lesson sort of ends where we are…taking a short step because a big step has her overreaching me and turning left right in front. We’ve cleverly found that clicking right as she starts a step will stop her for her reward (nicely looking away) but I could use some help going from one step to two or three without getting run over. Your next lesson on this topic of leading starts assuming we’ve done the basic work of this initial liberty leading – I’m missing something…Thanks!
