It is helpful for a horse to understand and feel safe in cross ties. While you may not do this often yourself, there are times, like traveling in a trailer or in a veterinary situation, that cross ties may be used. However, if this skill is not trained in a thoughtful manner, it can cause fear and panic. In this case, Taylor’s horse came to her with an unpleasant association with cross ties. I discuss some ideas for building up her duration and sense of safety. I focus on utilizing a systematic approach and positive reinforcement (R+) training techniques.
